Choose Story Time Chess if you want to teach your child the rules of chess yourself, at a table, through stories. Choose Jupo World if you want your child to play learning games with chess characters on their own, building thinking skills before the full game. They work well together.

What each one is

Story Time Chess is a board game for ages 3 and up from Thinking Cup Games. Each piece has a character and a story that explains how it moves, and the set has a story board and a normal chessboard.

Jupo World is an app for ages 4 to 10 built on Judit Polgár's Chess Palace method. Children explore a castle world and play more than 20 learning games; some use chess pieces and their moves.

Where they differ

  • Format: a physical board game played with a grown-up, or an app a child can play alone.
  • Goal: Story Time Chess teaches chess rules; Jupo World practises thinking skills with chess as the setting.
  • Price: a one-off price for the board game; a subscription for Jupo World's full world.
  • Screen: Story Time Chess has none.

Questions parents ask

Which teaches chess faster?

Story Time Chess is built to teach the rules. Jupo World is not a chess course.

Can they be used together?

Yes. The stories at the table and the characters in the app both make the pieces easier to remember.
